AM Technical Solutions (AM) is focused on productively deploying technology to efficiently support high-tech construction project delivery and create added value for our customers.
Last year, we released information about how we are using HoloLens mixed reality technology to help our customers visualize and better assess project plans for their facilities. This technology further enables our teams to coordinate and execute project work with contractors and trades to ensure we deliver project scope with a “first-time-right” approach.
Now, we would like to highlight how we are using the revolutionary HoloLens technology to support a design build high-tech lab and pilot line expansion project for one of our customers.
How the HoloLens Technology Supported Project Delivery
Our customer needed support with a multi-level lab / pilot line expansion project. The project called for us to take an existing, single-level facility and transform it into research and development (R&D) cleanroom spaces, clean corridors, gowning spaces, and a working interstitial level.
One of the primary challenges was a space constraint. Each level and space required its own equipment, utilities, specialty gases, and power to complete the expansion project. Space management and accessibility were critical for all the elements.
Due to the space limitations and the heavy amount of utility routing coordination required, HoloLens technology was used to ensure that our team and trade partners coordinated and aligned their work within the designed BIM routing zones.
When unexpected field clashes occurred, HoloLens helped us identify the deviation from the coordinated BIM plan, allowing us to quickly recognize problems and implement corrections. The use of technology also helped workers visualize the work to be done so that everyone had clarity and comprehended the BIM design to the field execution.
From a cost, quality, and schedule standpoint, our customer benefited tremendously. Using HoloLens helped us improve quality, avoid costly field clashes, and prevent delays due to re-work.
We were also able to increase customer engagement in the project. We hosted multiple walk-throughs with the project owners, allowing them to try out the HoloLens technology for themselves.
The walk-throughs created an added level of excitement for our customer. The leadership team could physically walk the lab space and experience the future of their finished facility months before it was set to be completed. They had something tangible to look forward to once the project was complete.
“Using the technology for this design build project gave our customer a clear vision of their future operating reality and helped us execute the project according to the project requirements,” says Dan Codi, AM COO. “We are eager to continue using the HoloLens mixed-reality technology to create added value for our customers.”
