The standard cleanroom classification range is ISO 1 to ISO 9, with ISO 1 being the cleanest and ISO 9 representing a standard room.
The most common cleanroom projects fall within the ISO 3 to ISO 8 range, which means that an ISO 8 cleanroom allows for the most particles in the air before reaching the territory of an average room.
What Are the Elements of an ISO 8 Cleanroom?
An ISO 8 cleanroom has specific characteristics that should be considered for construction planning. Keep in mind the following three key characteristics.
1. Know the Allowable Particle Count
ISO 8 (Class 100,000) allows for the highest concentration of particles for a cleanroom:
- 0.1 µm, 0.2 µm, and 0.3 µm: exceptionally high volume of particles
- 0.5 µm or smaller: 3,520,000 allowable particles
- 1.0 µm or smaller: 832,000 particles
- 5.0 µm or smaller: 29,300 particles
2. Know the Air Changes Per Hour
A cleanroom uses HEPA filters to remove particles from the air. The requirements for how often to filter particles varies for each classification.
On the range of classifications, an ISO 3 cleanroom will require the most air changes per hour, while an ISO 8 cleanroom will require the fewest number of air changes per hour.
There are many different factors that go into deciding the desired number of air changes per hour:
- Cost of construction
- Size of the room
- Number of anticipated users
- Desired processes in the room
- Equipment in the room
- Likely heat gain
3. Know the Cleanroom Layout
You need to understand the space requirements, including air/equipment requirements, layout, and personnel requirements to make sure that you have the proper space plan.
