Driving the FEP Chevy sponsored by AM Technical Solutions, fourteen year old rookie driver, Austin Self, started dead last and drove to an amazing third place finish in the Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Model race on Saturday, May 22. To pull this off, he had to power his way past some of the best, and most experienced adult drivers in Texas stock car racing. With a total of only three stock car races under his belt, Austin has finished in third-place twice and in fourth-place once. An extraordinary career-beginning to say the least!
Saturday’s race makes it clear that Self has successfully made the jump from being a multiple national Kart racing champion to a serious contender in Texas stock car racing. Having to start from the rear of the field on Saturday only added to the challenge, but Austin’s disciplined driving really paid off. “I knew I just had to be patient and wait for the right moment to get by the faster cars once I cleared the first two or three,” he explained. “So, that’s what I did.”
Later in the race, after suffering some front-end damage that limited his visibility, Austin shrewdly adjusted his strategy again: “That made me drive a little more conservatively over the last part of the race than I probably would have if I were able to see more of the track.” Surprising restraint from a competitive, young driver!
