Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 at Winchester Speedway to be televised on
NBC Sports Network, Thursday, August 1st at 11 p.m. ET
In his second ARCA Racing Series appearance, AMTS sponsored driver, Austin Wayne Self not only won the Scott Rookie Challenge, he came insanely close to also winning the Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 at Winchester Speedway on June 30th. This was his second top 10 finish in the No. 22 Cunningham Motorsports AM Technical SolutionsDodge after finishing 6th in his ARCA Racing Series debut.
Austin started fifth after the Menards Pole Qualifying was canceled and the starting lineup was set according to owner points. During the race, Self could be found running anywhere from the fourth to eighth position and by lap 80, he had made his way back up to fourth and was able to take four fresh new tires and fuel during his pit stop on a caution lap. When the green flag dropped during the restart on lap 146, Self took the AM Technical Solutions dodge three-wide for an exciting pass, bringing the crowd to the edge of their seats, and moved into the second position.
Austin fought hard to get to the back of race leader, Frank Kimmel’s bumper and came within only a few car lengths with ten laps to go. Given a few more laps, Self would have loved a chance to take on the race winner bumper to bumper but was only able to charge within one car length by the end of the race.
“With a couple laps to go, I told myself I was either going to win this race or scrape the wall trying.” Self said. “We had a really good car. I’m happy with the finish, now we know what this car can do.”
Austin became the seventh driver to win a SCOTT Rookie Challenge award in the 2013 season. It was an incredible honor for the teen-age driver.
