Performing a Critical Reliability Assessment for a Semiconductor Manufacturing Site

The team at AM Technical Solutions (AM) brings together key expertise in A&E Design, Construction, Quality, and Semiconductor Manufacturing and Operational professionals who understand the Design and Construction elements and their impact on efficient Manufacturing. Whether we are tasked with providing complete construction services or conducting an essential review, we aim to deliver exceptional value to our customers.

We are currently supporting a global semiconductor company with a third-party Power Assessment Study at one of their U.S. locations. A power system operation and maintenance reliability assessment will be performed in order to improve the reliability and efficiency of the facility’s existing power system infrastructure.

Our Project Scope for the Reliability Assessment

Our specific services include the following:

  • Identify potential operational risks or weaknesses in the current design with a focus on overcurrent protection devices, tie operations, and reliability optimizations.
  • Find gaps in the client’s current maintenance practices, predictive/on-line maintenance and monitoring approaches, and how the electrical teams work day to day.
  • Use client system models to evaluate the existing electrical system and identify operational risks to ensure reliable protection.
  • Identify investment-grade improvements and modernization opportunities to improve system reliability.

Our findings and recommendations at the facility will have a far-reaching impact. We have been tasked with taking our analysis and applying the same findings to our clients’ other fabs located in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

We have assembled a focused team led by an experienced Project Lead and supported by senior electrical engineers, subject matter experts (SMEs), and project controls specialists. Our team combines decades of semiconductor and mission-critical facility experience to deliver actionable, investment-grade recommendations efficiently.

Our team will review each site’s overcurrent protection scheme and generator protection settings to provide recommendations on reliability risks. We will also assess each site’s typical protection and control capabilities throughout the entire facility.

System components will include power supply, transformers, substations, main and sub distribution boards, power connections, power redundancy, age of equipment, code compliance, housekeeping, preventive maintenance practices, backup generators, and other systems.

Upon completion of the project evaluation, we will provide a comprehensive report detailing our analysis, methods, and recommendations. Included in our analysis will be:

  • A list of gaps and recommended improvements.
  • Recommendations for the site power distribution network.
  • Protection setting recommendations and improvements focused on reliability that will not compromise equipment protection or personnel safety.
  • Action items highlighting observed risks to reliability and an associated recommendation to mitigate each observed risk.
  • Benchmarking against other semiconductor plants.
  • Evaluation of how current or planned projects may be affected by our findings to improve reliability.

Providing this analysis will enable our client to implement the appropriate facility changes to ensure proper power sourcing for semiconductor production.
