The success of complex design/build projects in high-tech construction often depends on the ability to change when unexpected events occur. At AM Technical Solutions (AM), our ability to adapt mid-project was recently highlighted during our partnership with an advanced high-speed optical transceiver manufacturer.
We were awarded significant project scope to design and build ISO Class 7 and ISO Class 8 cleanrooms in a new production facility in the Southwest U.S. During the initial stages of the project, we were asked to make a significant shift in direction from a two-phase design approach to a single-phase design.
Learn how our teams were able to adapt to our client’s latest needs to deliver a turnkey cleanroom design / build project solution that fit the revised budget and timeline.
Our Cleanroom Design and Build Solution for the Facility
The initial two-phase project scope called for us to design the cleanrooms with a production capacity of 20K, with a future build-out to support 100K production. We were then asked to pursue the single-phased design approach to support 100K production only.
The change from a Two-Phase to a Single-Phase approach for the full build-out design had a time and cost impact on the initial scope of work. We fully supported the changes that included the following key aspects:
- Increased initial design effort to support the shift from two phases to one phase.
- Revised plans to support full capacity HVAC, electrical, and all utility systems.
- Coordinated with our client, the building owner, and the owner’s rep to ensure alignment on the new power capacity.
- Revised and expanded engineering capabilities for mechanical, electrical, structural, and fire protection systems.
- Integrated all cleanroom systems and supporting infrastructure to full production specifications at project outset.
We adjusted our resource commitments to accommodate the additional design, permitting, and project management efforts required to successfully deliver a turnkey, single-phase design/build solution that supports the 100K production requirement.
Our ability to adapt quickly ensured minimal disruptions to the overall project timeline. Despite the increased scope and complexity, we delivered a robust and scalable solution that aligned with the client’s production goals and regulatory requirements.
“When changes arise, we see this not as a setback but as an opportunity to showcase our adaptability and commitment to client success,” says Dan Codi, AM Chief Operating Officer. “Our team’s ability to transition efficiently highlights our expertise in navigating challenges to deliver solutions that meet and exceed expectations.”
